It is said – “A Picture is worth a thousand words”, so let’s first look at a picture to understand what a Summary Statement Writing means in context of CDR.
As is evident from the above picture, Summary Statement is nothing but amalgamation of the competency elements which are highlighted in career episodes. And to provide ready reference (mapping) to individual competency elements, career episode paragraphs are numbered which we also mentioned in Career Episode Writing Article.
Specific format of the nominated occupation can be downloaded from Engineers Australia website, which then needs to be filled up. It is a table format where all the competency units and elements are listed and the candidate has to mention how did he/she apply that and the associated paragraph in the career episode.
Competency Element | A brief summary of how you have applied the element | Paragraph number in the career episode(s) where the element is addressed |
---|---|---|
PE1 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL BASE | ||
PE1.1 Comprehensive, theory based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the engineering discipline | ||
PE1.2 Conceptual understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the engineering discipline. | ||
PE1.3 In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline. | ||
PE1.4 Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline. | ||
PE1.5 Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline. | ||
PE1.6 Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline. | ||
PE2 ENGINEERING APPLICATION ABILITY | ||
PE2.1 Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving. | ||
PE2.2 Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources. | ||
PE2.3 Application of systematic engineering synthesis and design processes. | ||
PE2.4 Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects. | ||

Here the trick is in understanding the expectations of Engineers Australia in each of these competency units. For example in Competency Unit – PE1 Knowledge and Skill Base,
Element PE 1.4 talks about
Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline
The expectation is that the applicant critically appraises the current developments and advancements in specialist practice domain. Specialist Practice Domain as per Engineers Australia Migration Skills Assessment Booklet is specific area under a broad engineering area like “Power Systems”, “Geotechnics” etc…
Hence care must be taken to ensure that these minute points are considered while writing the summary statement and career episodes.
If one looks at the Summary Statement format, one could easily figure out that it is divided into 3 sub-sections –
EA has also clearly mentioned what all is expected in each of the above elements in MSA booklet. Therefore make sure to go through that very carefully.
