Engineers Australia Migration Skills Assessment

An engineer who does not possess Australian qualifications or qualifications from countries that are signatories of Washington Accord has to go through the CDR pathway if they are looking for an engineering job in Australia. Competency Demonstration Report (CDR Report) is a document which must be submitted to Engineers Australia for Migration Skills Assessment purpose. With a CDR an engineer tries to impress upon the Australian authority that they have all the skills and competencies it is looking for.

The Engineers Australia Migration Skills Assessment (EAMSA) handbook published by EA covers all the information you need to know about the Migration Skill Assessment process. Not to forget, the handbook also covers all the essential guidelines which engineers should follow while writing the CDR Report.

Regardless of the thorough information EAMSA provides, a number of engineers still find their CDR rejected by Engineers Australia which causes them their migration visa.

With each passing day, we deal with many engineers, whose CDR had been rejected by Engineers Australia and they don’t even know the reason why? Getting rejected is not a pleasant feeling, and we understand that very well. Thus, at CDR-Report, we assist engineers by helping them craft a professional CDR, which assures them a positive remark by the EA.

A brief about the Skilled migration process

Before you plan to migrate to Australia under the Skilled Migration Scheme, you need to make sure that the engineering discipline you have experience in is listed in the Skilled Occupations List (SOL). If your engineering discipline is on the SOL list than hurray!!, you are eligible to apply for migration skill assessment. All you have to do next is, submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through skillselect. Please note that there are different ANZSCO Occupation Codes for all engineers. You need to select the one you want to apply for.

The expert panel at Engineers Australia is responsible for evaluating your engineering skills and qualifications. If the applicant is able to obtain at least 60 points during the assessment process, only then he/she will be invited for the migration visa within 60 days of the assessment process.

Also, you will be asked to prove your English competence by Engineers Australia. For this, you have to

  1. Obtain an IELTS score of 6 or more in each of the 4 test components (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) or
  2. At least 13 for reading, 12, for listening, 18 for speaking and 21 for writing in the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based (TOEFL iBT) test.

Do take note that these scores are only valid for three years.

For Australian immigration, EA generally categorize engineers under the following categories:

  •    Professional Engineer
  •    Engineering Technologist
  •    Engineering Associate
  •    Engineering Manager

As mentioned above, engineers who do not own Australian qualifications or Washington Accord qualification will need to submit a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) for assessment purpose which must include the following:

  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD) list: CPD list showcases everything you have done throughout to nurture as an engineer after completing your graduation in the field. This may include the books you have read and gained knowledge from, seminars you attended or the workshops and training programs you were a part of.
  • Three Career Episodes (CEs): This is the section of CDR where you get a chance to prove your worth to the EA. Writing Career Episodes require a lot of critical thoughts with a perfect blend of language and engineering skills you possess. In this section panel at EA wants you to mention three instances where you used your engineering skills in essay format. You need technical precision and the ability to follow the style sheet closely to pen down good-enough career episodes.
  • Summary Statement: A summary statement is not just a usual summary. A summary statement is as important as the CPD and Career episodes are, and should be prepared with the same level of diligence and professionalism. When writing a summary statement, you need to reference the summary statements correctly to the specific place in the career episodes where the said incident is mentioned.
